About Top Sets

Top Sets is a workout tracking app for lifters training for hypertrophy and strength. This page covers who makes it, and how the free calculators on this site are researched and checked.

What is Top Sets?

Top Sets is a workout tracking app for lifters training for hypertrophy and strength. It logs every set, writes next week’s loads with automatic progressive overload, and reads your training back as weekly volume per muscle group, estimated one-rep maxes and personal records. Its nutrition side learns your real maintenance calories from the meals and weigh-ins you log. It is in beta on iPhone now.

Who makes Top Sets?

Top Sets is made by a small independent team. Kurt Kalwin, founder of Top Sets, writes the free calculators and guides on this site. A person reads every message sent through the contact page.

How are the free tools made?

  • From primary sources. Each claim cites the study or report it comes from, and figures are checked against that source rather than a summary of it.
  • With published formulas. Calculators use equations as their authors published them, and each page shows the working.
  • Tested. The maths lives in the same codebase as the app and runs under the same automated tests. Where a source prints worked values, as the National Academies report on energy needs does, the tests reproduce them.
  • Dated honestly. A page’s “Updated” date moves only when its content changes.
  • Private. The calculators run in your browser, and nothing you type into them is sent anywhere.

The aim is that you never have to take anyone’s word for a number, including ours.

How do I report an error?

Email founder@topsets.app with the page and what is wrong. A fix moves the “Updated” date on the page it changes. For help with the app itself, see support.
